Covid Sports Protocol

Dighton Rehoboth Regional School  District Covid Protocol for Athletics

The Return to Play Protocol is based on research and recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (APA), The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA), Children’s Hospital of Boston (CHOB), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). There is concern that young athletes who have contracted SAR-2-CoV coronavirus may develop myocarditis (heart inflammation) or other complications resulting from coronavirus infection. As myocarditis is a leading cause of Sudden Cardiac Death in young athletes, extra precautions are advised depending on each athlete’s individual circumstances.

● Students who test positive for Covid-19 must isolate for at least ten days from the time symptoms begin or from the test date, whichever is sooner. They must also be fever-free without the use of antipyretics (medicine for fever) for 48 hours. Symptoms should also have resolved before returning to school.

● Students who were exposed to Covid-19 must be tested on day five or after, or if symptoms develop. Close contacts must quarantine for five to fourteen days. If symptoms develop during quarantine or thereafter, the student-athlete is required to be tested for coronavirus in order to return to any sports activity.  If a positive result is rendered the student begins the isolation protocol outlined above.

RETURN TO ATHLETICS PROTOCOL: (Guidelines from American Academy of Pediatrics)

All students who have been infected (evidenced by a positive Covid-19 test result) with SARS-CoV-2 must not exercise for a minimum of 14 days and must be completely asymptomatic for greater than 14 days before returning to exercise and/or competition. All students exposed to SARS-CoV-2 (considered a close contact), may not exercise for a minimum of ten days following last exposure despite a negative COVID-19 test result. If a close contact becomes symptomatic after day ten, they will be considered Covid 19 positive until cleared by a physician.

 ● Prior to returning to play, the infected student must be evaluated and medically cleared by their physician.

It is recommended that the physician complete a  Post-Covid-19 Medical Screening Exam.

Any infected student who has a history of- or develops cardiac symptoms should also be seen by a     pediatric cardiologist.

      ● Students who are symptomatic beyond 14 days must be evaluated by a pediatric cardiologist.

  • Students who develop severe infections that result in hospitalization, or develop Multisystem    Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C) must be treated as though they suffer from myocarditis and may not participate in sports for 3 to 6 months. These athletes must be evaluated and cleared to resume sports by a pediatric cardiologist.

  • Determination of a student’s isolation and quarantine protocol in an athletic capacity is made in collaboration with the local boards of health.

GRADUATED RETURN TO PLAY PROTOCOL: Upon medical clearance by their primary physician and/or cardiologist, the student will commence with a graduated return to play.

● School Certified Athletic Trainer will supervise the Graduated Return to Play protocol.

● Students must complete the progression below without development of chest pain, chest tightness, palpitations, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, pre-syncope, or syncope. If these symptoms develop, the patient should be referred to the evaluating provider for follow-up.

o STAGE 1: (2 Days Minimum) Light Activity (walking, jogging, stationary bike) for 15 minutes at no greater than 70% of maximum heart rate. NO resistance training

o STAGE 2: (1 Day Minimum) Running Drills or simple movement activities for 30 minutes at an intensity no greater than 80% of maximum heart rate.

o STAGE 3: (1 Day Minimum) Progress to more complex training (resistance training, agility drills, sports specific drills) for 45 minutes at an intensity no greater than 80% maximum heart rate.

o STAGE 4: (2 Days Minimum) Normal Training Activity for 60 minutes or less at intensity no greater than 80% maximum heart rate.

o STAGE 5:  (1 Day minimum) Return to Full Activity

    RTP prior to clearance.

● Cardiac symptom screening along with Covid-19 symptom screening will be performed daily.

Student-athletes who have tested positive for Covid-19 are not allowed to attend (including spectating) practices/games until they complete the Return to Play Protocol with the trainer. The completion of the return to play guidance will be documented and shared with a parent, coach, and school nurse.
