Welcome to DRRSD'S Professional Development Page

Our offerings consist of a variety of opportunities for our educators to acquire and improve their content knowledge and classroom understandings. Our professional development program is designed to create opportunities for our staff, that will enable constant improvement and growth.

The overarching topic for the 2019-2020 Professional Development is  “Best Practices to Next Practices" Major themes include:
Blended Learning/Educational Technology,
Instructional Practice in the Content Area with a focus on Literacy, and
Social Emotional Learning/ Meeting student’s diverse needs

Mentoring Resources

DRRSD community is interested in supporting teachers who are new to the profession and those who are new to the district though a comprehensive mentoring and induction program. We offer two year of one-to-one mentoring with an experienced peer who is matched as closely as possible with the mentee's grade and subject area of teaching. In year three our teachers who are new to the profession participate in group mentoring and discussions around problems of practice and solutions. The program is based on the "Mindful Mentoring” strategies of Carol Pelletier Radford.

Professional Development Initiatives' Resources

One of the ways that we gauge the effectiveness of our professional development is through the use of learning walks. This process is driven by a non-evaluative rubric of 'look-fors' that teams can frame a conversation about teaching and learning during a snapshot in time. By observing teaching and learning in practice we can make decisions to adjust professional development and/or deploy resources that will ultimately raise student achievement. We have many ongoing professional development initiatives that are directly connected to our School and District Improvement Plans. Below you will find links to shared resources to assist educators. These resources are being updated often so please check back. Please note that in most cases you must have a account and sign in to access these folders.

Balanced Literacy

  • In response to assessment data and need expressed by the building principals, all five of our schools applied for and were accepted into a three year DESE sponsored program aimed at strengthening teaching and learning of literacy in the district.  The MTSS Literacy Academy will support teams in building a data-driven, evidence-based, multi-tiered system and a defined literacy action plan to meet the needs of all students, so they can build critical skills in literacy as well as a foundation for success in school and in life. The academy offers all of the professional development (including team days, online modules, and graduate courses), planning support, and onsite technical assistance to districts with the outcome of a comprehensive literacy plan and increased student achievement. The teams from each school with district leaders will attend at least three full day sessions and participate in monthly site visits.

  • Weekly embedded PD will continue with an emphasis on the elementary level with PK-8 Literacy Specialist Mary-Anne Dalton.

  • Keys to Literacy  will continue their work in our district through follow up sessions with participants that include modeling and strategies through Q & A. Training for administrators and on-going planning for next steps to deepen implementation are part of this contract

Supporting a strong inclusion model

  • This is part of a multi-year effort to affect student achievement and promote inclusive education in the district through the restructuring of our Co-teaching model and supports for special education children. In year 5 we have built capacity through the work with Dr. Harris who is also training a select number of teachers and administrators who will serve facilitators/leaders of this work in the future.
