Accelerated Reader

 We would like to thank all of the readers who participated in the A/R program this year.  It was wonderful to see your progress and to be able to reward your efforts.  Unfortunately, the year is drawing to an end and we are sad to announce that the last day to take an A/R quiz will be June 4th.  The reader with the highest points will have his/her picture added to the “Reading Hall of Fame” in the library.  Lookout for your A/R cards and “End of Year Certificates”.

Don’t forget that you and your parents can access all the info you need about A/R at the www.drregional.org and www.arbookfind.com.  Keep up with your reading during the summer so you can get off to a running start next fall.

AR Book List

The Accelerated Reader Program at Dighton Elementary School is coordinated by a team of parent volunteers with the guidance of the school’s Technology Specialist.     This program is designed to motivate and challenge 1st-4th grade students to become more proficient and avid readers.

The quizzes are designed to help the student read with purpose.   All students 1-4 are encouraged to read at the level that is comfortable for them.  This is extra-curricular reading and it should be enjoyable, not a chore.  Teachers and parents who really want to see growth in the student can nudge the student to a higher level, as they deem appropriate. Students acquire points by taking quizzes based on the books they have read. Each book is given a point value based on its difficulty level.

Ready. Set. What do we do next?

1.     Choose a book from the list of available quizzes.

·          The link is provided at the top of the page.

·          This list is in order by Reading Level.   Once you get to the reading level range you want, you can look through the titles, authors and points associated with the books.

2.     Get the book

·          The books can be found at the school library

·          They can also be found at our local public library

The books are identifiable by a colored dot sticker found near the call number on the spine:

Red= level .03-1.9

Yellow – 2-2.9

Green=3-3.9, Blue=4-4.9

 The majority of quizzes in the red level are Voice Enabled.  This is activated when the student selects the “I had the book read to me” option at quiz time.

3.     Read the book (for best results, the book should be read twice, at the lower levels).

4.      Pick a time and place to take the quiz

·          Class

·          Computer lab: Mondays and Thursdays between 8:15-8:45 a.m.  A parent volunteer will be present, but be sure to accompany the child.

5.     Take the comprehension quiz on the computer.

·          The student can refer to the book for answers, if necessary.

·          The student can also ask for help, if she/he does not understand or if she/he has trouble reading the questions/answers.

·          Most of the lower level quizzes are voice enabled, meaning that the questions and answers are read to the quiz taker via a headset.   Choosing the “I had the book read to me option, at quiz time, will activate this feature.

6.     The software grades the test and then awards points in accordance to the number of correctly answered questions. The maximum amount of points that each book is worth is determined by the difficulty of the book.

7.     The rewards will be distributed by the teacher.  Rewards such as, a variety of certificates, prizes, invitations to special events will be prepared by the AR volunteers and forwarded to the teachers.  A card with each student’s picture will be posted at the entrance to the library.  Stars will be added to the card as a visual way to demonstrate the student’s progress.  The best reward though, is the success of completing a book and enjoying it!

8.     How parents can help

·          Read to your child. Reading aloud or with your child plays a vital role in becoming a good reader.

·          Encourage your child to read daily. Practice makes perfect.

·          Volunteer some of your time to help with the AR program. We need volunteers to assist with special events, read to or with a child, or assist a younger student with testing.

Should you have any questions, please call 508-669-4245 and ask to speak to the Mr. Badger, Technology Specialist.  We hope that your child will thrive and that this program will nurture their love for reading this school year.  Thank you!
